LONDON PØRN SHOW - DAY 3

By El Clinto on Thu, Nov 22nd 07 at 07:51AM | Permalink | Comments (27)

Day 3 - it was a grand day at the show. Surprisingly the most in attendance was today, Sunday. The bibles are completely gone and we had people asking till the end of the show. Highlight of the day: El Clinto and I met a nun from Norway who was on holiday. Yes, completely ridiculous. She said "Girl's got to have a little fun." Initially she joked about being an actress and then as she walked off said "no I am a nun," but then brushed it with a laugh and exclamation that she was entirely joking. She later came back by our booth and confessed to Clint and I that she actually was a nun from Norway. Ah the pørn show you never know who you are going to meet.

Stay tuned for the last video update and a complete video edition of the audio podcast for the week.

Day 2 - it was a killer day at the show. Some great conversations happened. So many stories from people being burned by religion and the church to people in the porn industry that are struggling to keep their christian faith. The stories we are hearing at the show are simply starkly real and utterly beautiful at the same time. All the bibles are almost gone and we are ready for day three. Check out Update #3 below.

Day 1 is down. What a day. A little more apprehension when it comes to the bibles and all the church stuff but not the JLPS edition. Hundreds of JLPS bibles hit the streets of London. Our team included a couple local Londoners, Jonathan and Lucy. Great people, really rocking the floor on all fronts. From Clint, Craig, Brandon and the team - thank you for your thoughts and prayers! London Pørn Show - Update #2

Today we spent the day setting up for the show and had some spare time to grab Thanksgiving dinner. We really did it up American style and ate at the Texas Embassy, simply a tex-mex restaurant that served turkey. Happy Thanksgiving from the X3 family abroad and in the states.

The show starts tomorrow, friday, midday. The guys at out neighboring booth are from Spain and are promoing some fancy beanbags and the others have yet to arrive. The anticipation is on. Check out some pics from around town and pre-show here.

Below is a video of our travels - London Pørn Show Update #1

Elclinto and I head over to London tonight to meet up with Craig and the team. Later this week we will debut the JLPS Bible in the great United Kingdom, a little different from the King James Bible that originated there a few hundred years ago. We are excited to say the least.

Some stats about the Adult Expo we will be at...
1. 80,000 + attendees
2. Is the highest attended consumer show in the UK (Per Sq. Foot)
3. Worlds biggest adult lifestyle show.

We’ll be video blogging and posting pictures daily. Your prayers and thoughts are much appreciated.

I don't know how to make html, but I found this on drudge, and I thought you guys might think it was interesting.

The porn industry is losing money from the internet, mainly the porn equivalents of youtube.

Its not just the youporn service - its also the p2p services, exactly the same thing that is happening to non-porn movies. One big difference is that hollywood can be the 'good guy' in public campaigns - while of the porn industry does anything in plain sight, anything at all, it would be widely condemned. Hating porn in public is very fashionable - even for those who watch it in private.

The XXXChurch, the impact is going to be that any regulations on porn are going to get harder and harder to enforce. If the entire entertainment industry, an army of lobbyists, international trade groups and several major government crackdowns have been unable to put a significent dent in p2p, then what hope is there is surpressing internet porn? It just cannot be done. If people want porn now, regardless of their age and location, they can get it very easily and without payment - even if their government has a restrictive no-porn-at-all policy.

Interestingly, all of the legal events I have seen involving porn in a long time are local and very physical things - disputes over zoneing codes largely, as smaller communities try to force out sex-orientated businesses ranging from porn-selling video stores to strip clubs. Ive even seen one government official, whose name I dont recall, boasting that even though the first amendment prevents him banning the businesses he can make the zoning and operating requirements so strict and the red tape so tight that its impossible for all practical purposes to exercise that first amendment right. It seems silly really that people get so horrified that a local business is selling porn, when it doesn't really matter: The customers dont *need* a physical store any more.

I pray for the Lord to be with you wherever you are and to grant you success in all that you do for Him.You are sowing good seeds, so that's a great job.

Hi,

The video was broken up several times and it's quite painful to watch and hear the video. You think you can fix it? Thanks.

MT: Tempting, but ive just gotten back from London today, and its been quite exausting... if he had been speaking on Saturday, I would have gone to see even if it meant missing the end of the furmeet I was attending, but if I go up again on sunday I will be in no fit state for work on Monday... and really, im not quite so bothered that I will go to all the hastle and expense of a two-and-a-half-hour trip each way, when I have urgent things to do like repair the bike-tire that some vandal of a pupil slashed. So I seem to have missed the chance now. Oh well, I tried.

Suricou Raven:

I feel the need to clarify that pornography in the US is not a first amendment right. It's actually up to states and cities to determine what is considered lude or offensive in terms of freedom of speech or press.
Suricou Raven wrote on November 27th 07 at 12:45PM
Its more complicated than that. The first amendment only says that "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press ..." Exactly what this means, including the vital matter of what constitutes speech, was left up to the courts. Those courts then spent the next two hundred years producing various different standards, often contradicting those set by earlier courts or other jurisdictions. The amendment itsself is so vague, everything is in interpretation.

Most of them have found that 'obscene' material isn't classed as speech, a solution that has proven most unhelpful as it merely changes the problem into that of defining obscenity - and inherently subjective standard.

The most authorative ruling on the issue seems to be the 1973 Miller case, when the judges did their best to establish some standard for defining obscene material - the Miller test. Its vague, its subjective, and its tied to community standards that mean material may be considered obscene in one jurisdiction and protected speech in another. It changes with community standards, so things that would be considered protected today might have been classed as obscene were the test in place a century ago. It requires judges and juries make distinctions in the fields of art and science, where they are often not qualified. Look at some modern art - critics can spend hours debating the symbolic value of what the average person would consider a pile of scrap. However, its the best legal test anyone has so far come up with - and its the only one available that even approaches practical.

The great fun in this legal issue comes from the lack of a clear boundry. It is easy to find works that almost everyone would consider obscene, or to find works that noone would find obscene. But between the two is a scale of nearly infinite graduations, and no clear boundry.
