Porn Industry Seeks Federal Bailout

By Brandon on Wed, Jan 7th 09 at 01:47PM | Permalink | Comments (21)

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.

But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly."

So far, there has been no congressional reaction to the request.

What is a $5 billion dollar bailout do to help stimulate Americans sex lives???? That is something that happens through a strong relationship with your spouse because you love each other and want to. No amount of money can change that.

I can think of an infinite number of other places this money can go than to boost the profits of an already grossly over profited industry.

I think they mostly did at out of comic publicity lol....funny

I'm sure they're giving it careful consideration

Well if they can go and ask for $5 Billion to help the adult entertainment industry then why not distillers of alcohol, the religious community, especially the catholic church with all of their law suits pending and the list goes on and on. Heck maybe all Americans should ask for just $100,000 each and take care of their own problems instead of letting the US Government do it?
I guess it comes down to whatever works. Huh?

What I find fascinating is the assumption that there is a connection between pornography and sexual activity: Most pornography use is linked not to sex with your spouse but masturbation by yourself. If sex is on the decline in the USA (and this is probably just a publicity stunt) then pumping more money into the porn industry is the WORST thing you could do for it. Remove pornography completely and watch men and women be forced to connect with their spouses for arousal!

I couldn't sleep tonight after seeing this article and another version earlier tonight. "Fear and lies fester in darkness. The truth may wound, but it cuts clean." This is an excerpt from my journal. This is the reality as I know it and I keep reading that honesty is helpful for people recovering.... so here it goes.

********

Father,

I am unable to sleep tonight. The porn bail out..... the backwards talk..... the person commenting that it was funny. HOW MANY FATHER, HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I READ THAT THESE MEN WE HOLD DEAR, THESE TEENS, THESE WOMEN, IT STARTED WHEN THEY WERE AS YOUNG AS 6 OR EARLY TEENS. THE PICTURES BURNED INTO THEIR BRAINS OF THE FIRST TIME THEY SAW PORN. MANY OF THE MEN AND WOMEN THAT LARRY, HUGH AND JOE EXPLOIT JUST WANT LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE AND THINK THAT PEOPLE DESIRING THEM IS THAT BECAUSE THEY'VE HAD MESSED UP EXPERIENCES LIKE I'VE HAD! FATHER I AM ANGRY. I CAN'T HIDE IT FROM YOU SO I'M COMING RIGHT OUT AND GETTING IT OUT. I KNOW YOU CAN TAKE IT AND YOU KNOW WHY I'M SO MAD!!! THEY ALWAYS ACT LIKE EVERYTHING IS A JOKE. I KNOW THEY HAVE THEIR STORIES TOO, BUT I'M NOT OPEN TO THAT RIGHT NOW. BECAUSE OF THE DRIVEL THEY PANDER AND THE PEOPLE THEY EXPLOIT I GOT RAPED AND MOLESTED. THAT'S NOT A JOKE!!! A FIVE YEAR OLD BY A TEEN TURNED CURIOUS AFTER VIEWING PORN MAGS. I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!! THESE GOOD MEN LEAD ASTRAY BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY PANDER!!! FAMILIES BROKEN BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY PANDER!!!! HEARTS BROKEN BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY PANDER!!! INNOCENT PEOPLE INFECTED WITH DISEASES BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY PANDER!!! AND THEY LAUGH ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK!!!

Mark 9:42
[ Causing to Sin ] "And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck.

Matthew 18:5-7 (New International Version)

5"And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. 6But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

7"Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!

Luke 17:1-3
1Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. 2It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. 3So watch yourselves.
"If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.

FATHER IS IT WRONG THAT RIGHT NOW I ENJOY THE THOUGHT THAT THEY WILL GET WHAT THEY DESERVE!!! I KNOW YOU KNOW ALL THAT MAKES THEM WHO THEY ARE..... BUT I RELISH THE THOUGHT. THE YEARS THAT I HAVE BELIEVED LIES ABOUT WHO I WAS AND WHAT I WAS WORTH. THE TIME STOLEN FROM MY HUSBANDS AND I'S SEX LIFE. THE CONFESSIONS ON 3X..... and You know all the stories to be known. How do You stand it Father... How do You stand it. I can't imagine.... I can't imagine.............................

*********

Thank goodness the Father is who He is. Praise God Donny is out and has a new life!!!! Perhaps the others will get there too.

I would just like to point out the arrogance of these 2 individuals.

Flynt says, "... Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.” Now I assume that by "them" Flynt means the government, but isn't that exactly what they're supposed to determine? How to best use OUR MONEY for the "good" of the country? Not that they've been doing that, as evidenced by our current economic situation, but if arrogant idiots would stop asking for handouts because they don't know how to manage their (our) money, and if the Government would stop trying to please every single person in the world, then we'd be a whole lot better off as a nation.

Then it says that they both "concede the industry itself is in no financial danger." Basically they're saying, "hey, we don't need this money, but since everyone else has their hand in it, why don't we get some too? We deserve it." This is the same sort of mentality that people use who are on welfare and DO NOT NEED TO BE.

I don't want to turn this into a political discussion, just throwing in my 2 cents.

Survivor,
Your post moved me deeply. I pray right now that Jesus would give you peace and healing. The strength of the Lion of Judah be upon you, and the Son of God shield you from these attacks.

You have given us all of a reminder of the added costs of pornography. Those men who profit from such pain should be brought to account and made to pay for the pain they cause on a daily basis.

God bless you. I thank God for the strength you have already displayed, and that this strength would continue.
Survivor wrote on January 8th 09 at 03:20PM
Dan, thank you for the prayer. I no longer try to stuff attacks but give them to the One that can handle them. Plus I feel there is a message in the fact that even Jesus got angry about people being taken advantage of in the temple. For me, anger is not something to be afraid of, but experienced and released appropriately and I stress appropriately! For others, anger needs to be avoided. But that is between God and the individual. Today I can pray for Howard, Flynt, and Francis and I can even laugh at the publicity stunt, (really Aaron). It was a brilliant worldly maneuver. I was an atheist at one time and even fell for the lie that viewing porn would spice up our marriage. Because of my past, however, I just felt for the women being exploited.

I guess the biggest thing I want people to understand from my posts is please, please, please, being people that are struggling.... the reality is your children and teens have a higher probabilty of finding porn around. If your children or teens get glimpses and you are aware..... TALK WITH THEM. Better yet, just talk with them. Be honest and don't pretend or shy from the uncomfortable situation. It messes with their heads too and they get ideas in that very 'me' oriented time in their lives. I love the info from the Somebody's Daughter sight that explains, talk with the young people seriously about it. Don't shame them but rather discuss it in reality. ie; I know it is stimulating and very intriguing, but it's like candy. It starts off feeling good, but the more you get the more ill you feel.

Blessings everyone,

I heard about this on the news the other day: obviously, a ploy for cheap publicity and pretty much what one might expect from Larry Flynt. His attempt at a "homespun hero" image is useful for taking attention away from the harmful effects of pornography, just as Li'l Abner was for moonshine in the 30s or Cheech and Chong was for drug users in the 70s. Perhaps, however the way the media have picked up on this imagery though is their tacit acknowledgement that porn does in fact have harmful effects just as was generally known about alcohol in the 30s and drugs in the 70s. Publicizing such a stunt could be their way of seeking relief from porn's morbid aspects and saying "Okay, we can't make porn go away tomorrow but we can do our best to make light of it and get on with our lives."

Porn seems to be at least as pervasive today as alcohol was in the 30s and drugs were in the 70s. If lawmakers approach porn in a similar manner, we would likely see measures to regulate rather than eliminate it. A ban on pornography altogether is not likely to happen any more than a ban on alcohol or marijuana, but it would be interesting to see just how influential ministries such as this one could be on regulatory policies.

Can't someone, make some kind of Petition against this, I don't like to see and hear my fellow school children talking and looking at these things, and even my own sister (Who is only just 13)?

Interesting that the spokesman should say, "It's not for them to determine whether the porn industry going out of business will affect Americans." because, isn't that what they've had to evaluate on all the other businesses so far? Nice cover up except that everyone can clearly see that these men are only doing this for greedy reasons that in no way benefit America, yeah they might provide jobs, but how many sex slaves have they tied into their industry along with broken and exploited people? As far as I'm concerned, if Larry Flynt and Joe Francis' businesses go broke, that will in no wise hurt America. Wasn't Joe Francis prosecuted for exploiting women during spring break about 5 years ago anyways? And why was he exploited? because he turned their flirty (if that's a right word) videos of girls flashing the camera for a keepsake of the guy(s) taking the video, into internet and dvd materials for the whole world to see. Not that what the girls did was right, but how he went about it to get the videos and make a profit off of it was classified as exploitation.

All their arguments are paper thin and fallacious to begin with. In what way is porn going to stimulate sexual activity amidst depression? I can see teenage pregnancies arise as a result of their attempt to "cure" a supposed 'sexual slum' we're in due to their push of sexual freedom of anything goes, when really one could conclude that porn is one of the reasons for the sexual slum we're in to begin with. It has destroyed thousands of marriages and is one of the reasons for drug and alcohol abuse as well. Seriously, how many ex porn stars say that their lifestyle led them to use drugs and or alcohol? Nearly all. And on top of that, how many families have broken up because of porn, only to end with one or both of the parents addicted to alcohol (in some cases drugs)? hundreds. And what's up with "People cannot live without sex"? Since when does not having sex cause your body to shut down and die? Since when would a starving person rather have sex than eat? What about Eunuchs, nuns, and priests and others who've committed their lives totally to celebacy and never slept with anyone? Further proof of the fact that they're greedy. I'd rather have 30,000 dollars worth of machine (a car), than 30,000 dollars worth of porn. At least I know that if I bought a car manufactured in Detroit it wasn't made by some sex slave from Asia that was promised a new life in America.

Well, I don't agree with this bailout, but I didn't with the others either. The man does have a point. We've bailed out everybody else, might as well do the porn industry now.

I totally support Larry Flynt on this one. First off, why is gov't have anything to do with the economy. There has never been a nation where gov't was separated from economics in the history of man. U.S. came close at the end of the 19th century.. but now we really are a socialist country.

If gov't is going to give autos and banks money, they need to give everyone else money too...
Malcolm wrote on January 12th 09 at 01:29AM
Flynt is just using is image to say that the big 3 and the mortgage companies are sleazier than he is for the way they screwed up their businesses and come asking for a free handout while a smut peddler like him actually has to sell magazines for a living. Personally, I think the government should give more tax breaks to blog contributors. :)
Survivor wrote on January 13th 09 at 07:31AM
Malcolm,

Tax breaks to bloggers sounds good. LOL

I know there are all these intellectual reasons to talk about what Flynt has done and he likes pressing the envelope.

But I think there is another reason: sales are down. Free publicity.

Above was posted....
I don't like to see and hear my fellow school children talking and looking at these things, and even my own sister (Who is only just 13)?

Imagine the high schoolers and college students! He's truly brilliant. I just wish he put that brilliance to use for something else.

First off let me mention that if I had to say right now, black and white, if I believed in God I would say no. I firmly hold the belief that if there was a God he/she would not allow a lot of the things going on in the world to happen. With that being said, I don't believe that the porn industry should get a bailout, but I also don't believe any other industry should either. Where's my bailout? I'm going to be getting my college degree soon and last I checked the job market isn't doing so hot. Am I going to get money from the Fed to pay my bills?

I just have a question for everyone on this site. Why the hatred of the adult industry? I am a huge fan of it so maybe my view is skewed but it's a fun stimulation to the adult sex life. You blame the industry for all these ills, kids watching it, girls in the industry ruining their lives, people becoming addicted. Do you blame Universal Pictures when a child watches Scarface? Do you blame Foldgers when someone becomes addicted to coffee? Do you blame World of Warcraft when a kid kills his father because he tries to make the kid stop playing and go to school? No! So why does the adult industry need to be accountable for all of this and much more! If a child steals his moms credit card to join an adult website it's porns fault. If a girl performs in a scene she doesn't want to perform in it's porn's fault. I don't understand where personal accountability got lost in this country.

And if there is a God, it seems to me his/her ideas on sex seem a little archaic. Humans have evolved and our attitudes and views on things have changed, so why can't God's? Does he/she exist in a vacuum, is the bible that rigid that it doesn't allow for "updating"?

Well hopefully I can get some of these questions answered.
Survivor wrote on January 14th 09 at 01:17AM
Dan,

I understand. I struggled with the thought that an all powerful God would allow bad things to happen. As shared above, I had a great deal to be angry about and why would God allow such a thing?

It wasn't His will for me. But He doesn't force us down and enslave us. As a college student I thought following the Lord would be one and the same with enslavement. I thought joining a church and becoming a believer was like being absorbed into the Borg like on Star Trek. LOL Instead it has been freeing in a way I never expected. And it's all because I've had to look at myself and understand I'm responsible for the years of feeling isolated because I chose to respond to my past by withdrawing. I was having ill health because I held onto the unforgiveness of the teen that was confused and used me. I hurt my husband because I withheld sex because I loved the fact I could say no and it was respected, never thinking about his side. I continued to be targeted after five because I acted as a victim and people took advantage of that fact.

My compassion for the women in porn comes from living their story short of on film. Many programs that look at the lives of people in the sex industry come from similar backgrounds to mine. I've made the list myself Dan of Do you blame.... do you blame..... do you blame.... But I realized I was jumping on the justify wagon. Being a lemming. I ask now.... knowing what I know, do I turn a blind eye!!! A blind eye to children being used for amateur porn videos online. Raped for a profit. A blind eye to the fact that many adults don't talk to their children about sex or about porn. A blind eye to women that come from my background. A blind eye to men, women and teens that are wasting away their lives staring at pixels when there are relationships and real life they could be enjoying. NO, I can't anymore. Then I'm part of the problem too. If you look at the advice given, it's all about becoming accountable.

In college what I knew of the Bible and what it said about sex was no masturbation and don't enjoy sex. LOL There's so much more to God's word than that. A husband and wife are supposed to be free with each other and enjoy their time together and melt into each other and have a deep relationship and enjoy sex and have no shame about it. Not what I expected to find.

I don't have all the answers Dan, I can only share some of my journey. I can tell you I wouldn't trade it in for the world and I am far better off today than just 2 years ago for taking the journey. I've had experiences that defy rationalizing. I used to think all this was for the weak. But it takes work and a tenacity to be willing to look at yourself under His microscope. And funny thing.... I am living and doing things I never could have done earlier in my life.

I wish you well and will hold you up in prayer because I do believe in it and God and the sacrifice His Son made.

Blessings Dan,
Survivor
