LOVE SEX HATE PORN - blogIn the past we had a shirt in our store that simply said, “LOVE. SEX. HATE. PORN.”

It’s a shirt that I conceptualized because, quite frankly, I was tired of sex getting a bad rep due to all of the damage the porn does. (Kind of like how Christ gets a bad rep because of what religion has to tendency to do at times…but that’s another blog for another time!)

I own a couple of the shirts and I don’t know if it’s because I live in the Bible Belt or what, but it’s an interesting thing to see the reactions of people when I do. It’s almost like they’re in shock that I’m out wearing a shirt that says both sex and porn. A couple of folks have even asked me what it’s supposed to mean. Exactly.

To me, what it means is that while God did create sex (please let’s all not forget that!), what he didn’t create was porn: the counterfeit of sex. And after reading a story that some of you might know about by now, I am more confident of that fact than I’ve ever been.

The Amplified Version of I Timothy 4:14-16 speaks to the importance of us sharing our testimonies so that those who hear us can be saved, along with ourselves. That’s why I have a lot of respect for the former porn star Vanessa Belmond and the stories that she shared about what her porn career had been like. One article stated this:

The former porn star horrifically recapped her seven-year career as Alexa Cruz, which included contracting chlamydia ‘three, four times or more,’ gonorrhea, and bacterial infections. She also described various tears she suffered in various parts of her body, and the painkillers she took to endure anal-sex scenes. During a gang bang, her throat started bleeding. And that wasn’t even the extent of her suffering.”

I have mentioned more times than I can count that one of my absolute favorite verses in the Bible comes out of the Message Version of I Corinthians 6:16-20: “Sex is as much a spiritual mystery as it is a physical fact. What’s wrong with porn? Oh, let me count the ways. (Tweet This!) But if I had to only choose one thing, it would be that it beckons us to treat sex as a physical act only when God intended it to be something that the mind, body and spirit could (and should) partake in.

Do you really think when God thought of sex, he thought of people having STDs and tears in their body and needing painkillers in order to endure certain acts? Do you think he ever even wanted a term like “gang bang” to be associated with something so sacred and special and divine?

Although Vanessa’s story, in some ways, caused me to cringe, I’m really thankful for her bravery.

It indeed reminds us all that porn is not sex. (Tweet This!)

That we should love sex.

And we should hate porn.
