This week I started reading the book of James again. James is one of my favorite books of the bible. While reading I came across verse 15 in Chapter 1 which says “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin when it is finished bringeth forth death. When I finished reading that verse I remembered a story I heard of a man who traveled to the Everglades. While there he described seeing a hammock tree that was slowly being strangled by a fig tree. Months earlier a bird dropped a tiny fig seed that lodged in the hammock’s branches. The fig tree sprouted and began sending roots earthward, spiraling around the hammock tree.Eventually the death-hug of the fig tree will prevail and destroy its host.

Many times we ignore our sinful practices until they become dangerous to our spiritual life. For sin to flourish it must be nourished by the very person it is harming. May we always be alert to sin’s influence and rely on God’s help to conquer it.
