It’s difficult to find a comedian nowadays whose routine isn’t riddled with sexual innuendoes.  After all, jokes about sex are easy and widely relatable… right?

The comedian Groucho Marx fell into this category also.  He was well known for the ridiculous – in both appearance and humor – and his jokes and one-liners often touched on the topic of sex, as this one does:

“I remember the first time I had sex – I kept the receipt.”

As ridiculous as that thought might seem at first, what gives it the element of humor is the stinging truth that lurks behind it.

Marx is obviously referring to the practice of holding on to a receipt when you buy something in case you decide you’re unhappy with what you received and would like to return it for a refund.

The “humor” (or, perhaps more appropriately in many cases, the “horror”) is that, with sex, that’s not an option.  There is no Refund Policy, and whether you realized it or not, you marked “I Agree” to the Terms and Conditions as soon as the clothes came off.

I understand that this probably isn’t revelatory information for anyone.  Most of us recognize that what’s done can’t be undone, and what’s been seen can’t be unseen.  We have to live with the consequences of our actions.  A recent quote from XXXchurch’s instagram (follow here) put it this way:  “You can clear your search history, but that won’t clear your head.”

It doesn’t make sense to “keep the receipt” from a sexual encounter.  As I’ve said, there are no refunds.  But, fortunately for us, there is another option.  What you can’t refund, you can certainly exchange.

1 John 1:9 says:  “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”  Also, Psalm 30:11 reads:  “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing.”

God freely offers an exchange to those who will turn to Him, but it’s both a decision and a commitment that we have to make.

Exchange the addiction and the shame that haunt you for purity.  Exchange the mourning and the depression that weigh you down for dancing and joy.

I can guarantee you this – nowhere else on earth will you find an exchange policy like that one.
