I have received many gifts over the years. Big gifts, little gifts, edible gifts, perishable gifts, gifts I don’t remember, and gifts I will never forget. Let me suggest to you that this holiday season you give yourself a gift that will last for the rest of your life: the gift of sobriety (and it sure beats your aunt’s custom-knitted sweater!)

Sexual sobriety is by far one of the most important gifts you can give yourself. So here are three big reasons why you should forget about the new iPad or that shower radio you’ve been eye-balling:

1. Sobriety lasts. At least, it should last. Some things are temporal. They fade, rust, wither, and are no more. But when you give yourself the gift of sobriety, it will last for the rest of your life. Of course, there is a maintenance plan, if you will, because you have to work to keep your new-found sobriety tuned-up with accountability, resources, support, and prayer. But, like a well-oiled machine, if you keep up the maintenance, your sobriety will last you for a lifetime.

2. Sobriety is free. I hate the hustle and bustle of making sure everyone on my shopping list has an adequate gift. Usually we end up making a last-minute stop by Walgreens or Dollar General before the big Christmas party to make sure we have enough gifts for everyone. And that can get expensive. But the gift of sobriety is absolutely free. Let me say this another way; how much will it cost if you don’t stop? Your marriage or relationship, your career, your reputation and integrity? Your ministry? Those things are priceless. It is much cheaper to get sober.

3. Sobriety is the gift that keeps on giving. I know, you might be thinking, “Getting a gift for yourself? Who does that?” Well, the gift of sobriety is actually a gift that goes beyond you. I assure you, this gift will be something your spouse wants, your children want, your friends want–and it is what God wants. The gift of sobriety is a gift that the whole family can share. I promise, this will be the best gift you’ve ever given to yourself or your spouse.

So there you have it. As you make your list and check it twice this holiday season make sure to give yourself the gift of sobriety. It will change your life, and those around you.
