In the next few days we’ll be finishing up our 26 Principles to Battle Porn blog series. If you’d like to catch up on all the reasons we’ve listed so far, you can read here!

Here are 3 more action steps/reasons:

TRIGGERS—Identify What Triggers You Looking At Porn?

A Trigger is that which places you in an atmosphere that encourages sexually acting out. A Trigger can easily take place when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired (HALT).  Specifically identify those triggers.

What Sight or Visual Image?

What Place or Specific Locations?

What Objects?

What Thoughts?

What Kind of Touch?

What Word or Words?

What Look?

What Feeling?

What Smell?

What Sounds? Music?

“Common internal triggers include feeling stressed, upset, lonely, angry, depressed, anxious, run down, sexually-frustrated, or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

Scriptural Basis:

Hebrews 12:1

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

UNCOVER Beliefs That Are Untrue about Yourself such as:

1.            If people knew who I really was they would not love me.

2.            I’m not sure that God loves me anymore.

3.            I can’t survive without looking at porn.

4.            Sex is my greatest need.

5.            No one else is having this kind of struggle with porn.

These are all lies.  You are loved for who you are and are not alone.  God unconditionally loves you. Your greatest need is not for porn or sex but intimacy with God.

Scriptural Basis:

John 8:44

“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

VISUALIZE the Consequences Of Where Porn Will Take You

“Men seem to be wired in such a way that pornography hijacks the proper functioning of their brains and has a long-lasting effect on their thoughts and lives. Pornography is “visually magnetic” to the male brain. …Enough is never enough.”

Porn won’t keep you at the same level you are now. It has an escalating effect and will take you further and deeper. That is the nature of porn. Think about the potential consequences to your marriage, your children, your job, your relationships, your walk with God, and your reputation. A few of those potential consequences are public humiliation, destroying intimacy and trust with your wife, not protecting your children spiritually, morally, and emotionally, ruining your reputation, financial consequences, putting a distance between you and God, losing the joy and power of salvation, and risking legal consequences.

“Pornography is a parasite because it steals your emotions, your focus, your time, your energy away from your spouse.”

Scriptural Basis:

James 1:14-16

“But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.”
