Interesting take on this. Not sure about U.S.

Is Facebook more popular than pornography?

That’s how BBC interprets recent data from Experian Hitwise regarding U.K. online traffic.

BBC appears to have sexed up Experian Hitwise’s findings. During January, social media sites accounted for almost 12.5 percent of all U.K. web traffic, while entertainment sites that include pornography got almost 12.2 percent.

We see no break-out of how many of the entertainment sites are X-rated ones, so calling these findings the first time that Facebook has outranked porn among U.K. web surfers seems erroneous.

Rather, this is the first time that more U.K. web traffic went to Facebook than to entertainment sites, as tallied by Experian Hitwise.

The important point in BBC’s quotes from Experian Hitwise Research Director Robin Goad: “One in every eight people leaving a social network visits another one immediately after.

One in every eight people leaving a social network visits another one immediately after. Facebook, for example, is a key source of traffic for many smaller social networks, while almost a fifth of people leaving Twitter go on to visit another social network.

Again, that applies to U.K. web surfers, who now account for more than 30 million of the members on Facebook.

Readers, what do you make of these findings and the BBC’s humorous interpretation of them?
