More than 100 employees at the Environment Agency are being investigated for emailing pornography to each other.

Five have been sacked and dozens suspended pending the outcome of an inquiry into the scandal.

Sources at the Government quango, in charge of ‘environmental protection’, claim the abuse is so serious that police have been called in. However, this was denied by the Agency.

Those involved are said to come from a number of offices across the country. But it is understood that four senior members of staff have been suspended from the Frimley office in Surrey, including a statistics manager and a flood specialist.

An Agency spokesman said a review of use of its email system had revealed attachments with ‘inappropriate images’ and that it was invoking its disciplinary process against 123 employees.
