Religulous Movie

If you have not heard of the new movie with Bill Maher, now you have. Well, looks like they are promoting XXXchurch.com all over their website. Check out the story taken from film school rejects.

Lionsgate has launched a new viral marketing website for the upcoming documentary Religulous, which features HBO talkshow host and famous non-believer Bill Maher taking on the world of religion. Along with Borat director Larry Charles, Maher has traveled the world to explore the state of world religion and ultimately get people laughing in the process. As he told Larry King, “there is something about religion today that is inherently funny.”

The website, Disbeliefnet.com, serves as a marketing tool as well as a portal into the mind of Bill Maher, who is one of the most publicly vocal cynics of organized religion around. And who can blame him for being a little jaded — as religion is often what is written on the front side of the violence train as it barrels through regions of the world. I’m not saying that I agree with everything Maher has to say, but like Michael Moore he often has a point.

Ultimately though, whether or not you believe (or don’t believe) the way Maher does, his intent seems to be to make you laugh. As long as you don’t take yourself too seriously, you just may, as the guy is generally pretty damn funny. In fact, the website itself is off to a good start, with articles such as “Kosher Cellphones for the Observant Jew” and “Evolution of the Burkini”. And there are also funny ads:

Save the Kittens

Come on people… You know those make you chuckle.

Either way, Religulous is set to hit theaters in a limited fashion on October 3, 2008. I would expect protests to begin at least a few days beforehand. In the mean time, visit Disbeliefnet.com and either laugh your ass off or make yourself more repressed and angry — whatever comes first.

Craig, I always enjoy reading your posts. But come on man, you don't have to start cursing, the cool thing about xxxchurch is that it takes a stand against what the world calls normal. The words we use are easily as damaging as porn. Sorry if I'm coming off as the prudish religious guy. I appreciate all that xxxchurch does.

@paul: if you'll look, the "curse word" you are referring to is in italics, meaning the words were from an article craig copied and pasted, not his own words.

he wrote at the beginning, "Check out the story taken from film school rejects." that is referring to the text in italics.

oh...my bad...I wasn't looking carefully. My apologies to Craig. Thanks Stephen.

What in the heck is "religulous" supposed to mean? Oh, wait, Bill Maher doesn't know Jesus, so he doesn't have a relationship with Jesus. That's why he's making this pointless "documentary". Seriously, what is this guy's problem with Christians? What did we do to make this guy so freakin' mad?

"Seriously, what is this guy's problem with Christians? What did we do to make this guy so freakin' mad?"

Imagine a world in which two thirds of the people worship Santa. They devote vast energy to the worship, building giant stockings. No politician can be elected without speaking of the great toys he recieved as a sign of the jolly one's favor. Wars have been fought over the correct style of belt-buckle or the origin of the flying reindeer. Sick people refuse hospital treatment in belief that the cure will come next christmas. When important political decisions are to be made or serious ethical questions considered, the books to study are not scientific studies but christmas carols, over which experts study for years to extract what they claim to be profound truths. Those in power try to write their christmas vision into law, criminalising activities they consider would offend the man in the great red suit. This state of society continues because those who dare question Santa are ostricised, and it is considered taboo to even suggest it may be false.

That is what Christianity looks like from the outside. And, as one of the tiny majority of non-santa-believers in that world, would it not really annoy you to see such obvious superstition elevated to a position where it dominates civilisations?
